Dr Mark Soloway on Active Surveillance

MARK SOLOWAY md psa screen ACTIVE SURVEILLANCE FOR PROSTATE CANCER In reponse to my recent article entitled,"PSA Screening for Prostate Cancer, the Failed Medical Experiment ", I received this supportive email from Mark Soloway, chief of Urology at the University of Miami:

Dr. Dach,

A Patient forwarded me your superb site and your article on PSA. Thanks for including our articles on AS (active surveillance) for low risk PC (prostate cancer).

I agree we very much overRx (over-treat) PC in general. Even if Rxs (treatment) is well done, there is a lot of ED (erectile dysfunction) that alters QOL (quality of life) in men who are at little risk of progression.

Currently I have >250 men on AS and only 14% have been treated. No patient with metastatic Prostate Cancer, and no deaths from Prostate Cancer in this group.

regards,

Mark S. Soloway, M.D.

Dear Dr Soloway,

Thanks for your kind words and comment on your ongoing experience with Active Surveillance for patients with prostate cancer.

For all of our readers, I might add that Dr. Soloway is very highly regarded by the medical community here in South Florida, both for his technical expertise and also his clinical judgement regarding Urology.  Over the years, I have referred a number of patients to Dr Soloway for a second opinion, and have always been impressed with the high level of care they received.

For those of you in the South Florida area who have been diagnosed with
prostate cancer on ultrasound guided biopsy, and wish to be followed with Active Surveillance, I strongly recommend Dr Soloway. For those in need of an appointment with Dr Soloway, the number to call is (305) 243-6090.

warmest regards,

I still believe early detection of prostate cancer has merit. Compare the chance of finding a clinically localized PC between men in Mexico (no screening) and the neighboring USA.

No chance of cure with early detection for the masses in Mexico and overtreatment possibly but high cure rate in USA. Key is to identify who has PC then understand that all men do not require treatment but can be carefully followed. Thus men with aggressive cancers can and should be offered a curative approach.
