Crohn's Recovery With Low Dose Naltrexone (LDN) by Jeffrey Dach MD

A Case of Remission from Crohn's Disease
with Low Dose Naltrexone LDN

by Jeffrey Dach MD

crohns disease distal ileum courtesy jeffrey dach mdTom came into my office about 6 months ago.  He is a 32 year old male with a long history of inflammatory bowel disease.  He has been evaluated and treated by many gasteroenterologists over the years, and was told he has Crohn's Disease, and will never fully recover.

Tom had seen my previous article on Low Dose Naltrexone, and he was interested in using it for his Crohn's Disease.   None of his other doctors would give it to him.  I started him on the drug immediately.  LDN is safe with virtually no adverse side effects, and has been shown effective for Crohn's Disease in a publication by Jill Smith MD at  Penn State University.

Crohn's Disease is a chronic inflammatory condition of the small bowel, and complete recovery is very rare. The following is the email from Tom describing his experience after 6 months of treatment with LDN:

Dr. Dach,

Thank you for helping me get rid of symptoms of one of the most problematic and debilitating diseases.  For more than 10 years I had

been struggling with Crohn's disease and fighting a losing battle.  For a lot of people, Crohn's disease doesn't respond well to traditional methods of treatment.

The anti-inflammatory drugs I was taking before I saw Dr. Dach had very little effect and the prednisone was such a destructive drug, I could only be on it for short periods of time.  I gained 85 pounds on my last round of prednisone and as soon as I came off, the bleeding and intestinal pain resumed and I started worrying about long car rides and being far from bathrooms.  This had a big impact on my personal and professional life.  I knew that if I ever wanted to get rid of the disease it would be with an unconventional treatment.

I first heard of LDN from doing a search on the internet and made an appointment with Dr. Dach.  I had exhausted every possible option before and felt like I had no where else to turn.  When I went to my appointment, Dr. Dach spent a lot of time with me and it felt very different than the "assembly line approach" that I was used to.

My first visit was in the summer of 2008 and I've been symptom-free ever since.  I could feel my body healing almost immediately after starting treatment.  For me, low-dose naltrexone has been a miracle drug.  I can now lead a normal life and do all kinds of things Crohn's disease would have prevented me from doing, like sitting through a movie or taking a long car trip.  This has changed my life and I hope more people can benefit.

Regards, from Tom

    Dr Dach,

My son was diagnosed with Crohn's disease and the Doctors have him on predisone, nexium and some more pills.

He has to go back to see his GI specialist the 22nd and they are going to put him on more meds.

I have been doing a lot of research and I happened to come across about low dose naltrexone and came across your web site.

This is something I would really want my son to try, he is 15.

The problem is I don't know if the doctors will agree to prescribe it.

Do you do phone consultations and if his records were sent to you would you prescribe it? If you would what would be your charge? I wish we lived in Fl. Thank you for any information.

    MG, a worried mother

    Dear MG,

Sorry but we can't prescribe over the phone. Here in Florida, doctors are not allowed to prescribe medications without actually examining the patient in the office.

If your son will be in Florida over the next few months, please call the office to schedule a visit. I would be glad to see him.

Otherwise, to find a doctor locally for your LDN prescription, please consult the doctor's directory page at A4M or ACAM. These pages list doctors who can help you.

    Hi Dr Dach,

Wishing our friends at TrueMedMD a happy new year! Hope things are going well..

My son, KH, visited Dr. Dach in September of 2008 to inquire about Naltrexone. My son was enrolled in a clinical trial a few months later, and has been doing quite well. His latest bloodwork showed inflammation markers were significantly reduced, and we have removed him from all immunosuppressants. We continue to see Dr. Jill Smith at Penn
St. U. for annual checkups, etc.

We will be forever grateful to Dr. Dach for giving us access to this medicine when 'corporate medicine' wouldn't.

Thanks again, and I hope this year is a good one.

    regards from JH
